The Standard That Changed Everything
For a long time, I believed having high standards meant constantly producing.
If I wasn't building something, learning something, earning money, or making progress, I felt like I was falling behind.
Taking a day to slow down felt like I was lowering my standards.
But recently, I realised something that completely changed the way I think.
Sustainability isn't separate from your standards. It is one of your standards.
That one idea shifted everything.
Productivity Isn't the Goal
We're taught to believe that being productive means always doing more.
More work.
More hours.
More effort.
More sacrifice.
But if your approach leaves you exhausted, disconnected, or constantly needing to recover, then it isn't sustainable.
And if it isn't sustainable...
It isn't a standard you can actually live by.
The Question I Started Asking Myself
Instead of asking:
"Was I productive today?"
I started asking:
"Did today look like the life I'm trying to build?"
Some days that means deep, focused work.
Other days it means reading.
Thinking.
Spending time with family.
Going for a walk.
Doing absolutely nothing for a while.
Not because I'm avoiding work...
But because I'm protecting my ability to keep showing up tomorrow.
Discipline Looks Different Than I Thought
I used to think discipline meant pushing through no matter what.
Now I think discipline is knowing when to push...
And knowing when to recover.
Recovery isn't the opposite of discipline.
It's part of it.
Professional athletes don't become exceptional because they train every waking hour.
They become exceptional because they understand that recovery is part of the training process.
The same applies to us.
A Better Definition of High Standards
I've started to believe that high standards aren't measured by how much you do in a single day.
They're measured by whether you can consistently live them for years.
Anyone can work themselves into the ground for a week.
Few people can build a life they can sustain for decades.
That's the real challenge.
A Thought Worth Holding Onto
Maybe success isn't about squeezing more into every day.
Maybe it's about building a life that you never need to recover from.
Because in the end...
A standard that can't survive ordinary life isn't really a standard.
It's just an expectation.
